Hello smart Ubuntu people

I had Ubuntu 9.10 installed into my Acer Netbook yesterday and I began surfing the web using Firefox over a wireless dsl line without difficulty. All went well for about thirty minutes and then the whole thing froze up and I couldn't even shut down the Netbook except to hold down the on off button for a long time. When I tried to shut down the normal way, the screen froze is went black and read:

*Stopping NTP server *Starting NTP server ntpd

Broadcast message from root@oobrien=laptop (unknown) @ 9:12
The system is going down for halt NOW!
init: cron main process (1233) killed by TERM signal
acpid: exiting

init: rsyslog-kmsg main process (501) killed by TERM signal
init: hal main process (516) terminated with status 1
init: avahi-daemon main process (514) terminated with status 255

I am a total novice and have no clue what any of this means or how to fix it. If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful.

I've attached a fuzzy picture of the screen. Best I could do with a handheld camera.

Thanks.

Ed

Did it do this again when you rebooted?

No. It reboots normally, but then after 30 or so minutes it happens again

Is it just Firefox or any time you are using it?

happens with seamonkey also.

Okay, does it freeze without being online?

It never has so far. Only while online.

I just spent about 20 minutes hunting the forums and haven't found anything useful yet. I'll keep looking.

Firefox optimization and troubleshooting thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1193567)

Also available with navigational menu here (http://lovinglinux.megabyet.net/?page_id=220).

I would try this (http://lovinglinux.megabyet.net/?page_id=220#Firefox-becomes-unresponsive-%28grey%29-frequently-2).

I send people to your thread all the time. It hadn't occured to that it would help here. Doh!

Thanks for referring users to it. What do you think about the new version posted on the new blog?

It doesn't want to load right now. I'll try again later.
