I need a wiki for my site. I am leaning towards dokuwiki because it is simple and looks really nice. Is this a decent wiki to use? It seems like such an interesting piece of software because it seems really simple and elegant, but lacks features that the others have. But at the same time it has a really nice editor and so far has worked flawless. The password authentication is also simple, but seems like it would be enough to keep the spamers out. How does this software get such good reviews, but feature wise does not offer as much. Is it because the features that count are good?

I have googled and have done my homework, but I think I need my fellow Ubuntu users to give me advice.

I've tried out various wiki software - Docuwiki, moinmoin, and Usemod. Mostly for my own personal note taking, and idea organising - and also at work for team collaboration (Usemod - I find it ugly - maybe just not configured well). I find docuwiki the best at home - it is very simple to run, and I have had no problems with it - except a very slight problem installing from Synaptic which the forum solved for me. It looks smart out of the box, and is easy to write for. If you want an industrial-strength wiki - MediaWiki looks just the ticket. Thats the one wikipedia uses - I'm waiting to find an excuse to try it out. Certainly it has the most features of any wiki I've used. Needs MySQL though.

There is full list of wiki software here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wiki_software
and a comparison of many wikis here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_wiki_software

I'm the sysadmin for the UDSF (see link in sig), and we like uncyclopedia and wikipedia, and the gentoo wiki, use mediawiki, which is in the repos. It does rely on having an SQL backend however.

After much deliberation, and thanks to the posting here, I decided on Mediwiki. I really love it! Their website talks a lot about the server requirements, but it does not seem to use many resources at all. I love the features and now just have to work on skinning it. Thanks for the advice :).
