In reading some of the threads regarding how to make Ubuntu act and feel like Windoze, I have this question:

Why switch to a completely different OS with a whole different feel and philosophy and then try to customize and tweak Ubuntu to BE Windoze in look and feel?? I feel the switch should be 100% or not at all....

It could be a home sickness thing.

What's this Windoze OS which seems to be ever so popular around here?

I've heard of Windows. But these offshoot OS's are a conundrum for me. I just can't seem to locate Windoze or Window$ anywhere.

Windows is Microsoft's proprietary OS, and "WinDoze" is an insult to it. I don't blame the people who use the insult. Micro$haft needs to get a grip.

Because windows is expensive and not everyone can afford it, even if they prefer it.

I do agree though, I don't understand why they prefer it that way. But everyone is entitled to their opinion. One of the best things about ubuntu for me is that I can make it look exactly how I want, easily.

+1

That's one reason why I think Ubuntu is better :)

Grow up child, you'll realise that when you get into the real world and get a job that.. ah never mind, there's no point explaining to you.

mmm If you don't like an OS then don't buy it, telling Microsoft to buck up seems a bit misdirected. I hear you can get a refund for the OS on purchased hardware that comes with Windows trial OS before accepting the licence.

I don't blame the people who use the insult. I do. It's counter-productive.

By the way, there's nothing wrong with wanting Linux to behave or look like Windows. The important difference between Linux and Windows is the license, not the behavior or look.

After all, if you are anti-similarity of any kind, then why use windows at all or have Alt-Tab, or copy and paste, or a web browser. Maybe there shouldn't be a toolbar?

Seriously. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the way Windows acts or looks in terms of its interface. What is wrong is Windows Genuine Advantage, activation codes, vendor lock-in for the .doc format and for Hotmail with non-Outlook email clients, and Microsoft's strong-arming of OEMs to preinstall Windows and lock out Linux pre-installations (I love how Dell "recommends" Windows on the Ubuntu pages... classy!).

I think Microsoft has nothing to worry if a couple of people return the software, or even if that number is a thousand.
They start to worry the moment, crackers and traders stop distributing windows over P2P networks and no one uses illegal copies of it anymore.

I do not need a windows clone. Thats why i love Gnome.
The best is, that i do not need to use anything from the windows world at all. I am blessed in that way.

Please take this nonsense elsewhere. A more mature conversation is preferred here. Regard this as warning final.

Nothing wrong with colour schemes like Redmond (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Murrina%20Redmond?content=95262), or tweaks to make GNOME look more like Windows. If that's your choice, then you're free to do it.

Nothing wrong with disliking Windows, either, if you have a valid reason. "Microsoft is evil" does not a good reason make. There are more "evil" corporations out there, and there always will be. I don't agree with Microsoft's monopolistic tactics, but that's beside the point. I don't like Windows because I happen to think that an Open Source OS like Ubuntu is infinitely more usable.

The first thing I do when setting up a Linux distro is modify the GUI to look as much like Windows 95 as possible. I just like the look, feel, and color scheme. It was the first OS I ever used on a home computer and I like the simplicity.

They also recommend you buy a 50 dollar floral laptop bag, I don't think anyone takes that seriously. And on dell Ireland they recommend buying 2 years warranty even though by Irish law they're obligated to provide 2 years free warranty anyway and anyone who buys something electronic from them automatically has that.
People understand the commercial nature of the "recommended" thing, I don't think it's an issue.

I like windows, I just like Ubuntu better. I still can't get over the fact I've been using it nearly what... 6 months.. and not had a single problem with it. Not one. I use XP at work and every day something bad happens. And everyone just accepts that "computers are crazy". "we'll buy a new one next year"

Hee hee, I do that on my Vista partition, except with win98. Best thing they ever did!
I love the gnome look though.

Can you imagine Apple "recommending" Windows 7 on its website? Hell, no. They don't mind you running Windows 7 with Parallels or Boot Camp, but they want to highlight and recommend Mac OS X, of course.

I agree with aysiu. If someone who doesn't know a lot about computers will see that they recommend Windows. Me personally I don't care what the manufacturer "recommends" I very rarely buy anything extra if it is not needed. That is why if and when I buy another laptop I am buying an HP because I don't want the warranty and more than likely I won't use it, if you buy a dell you have to get 1 year warranty that they include in the price. No thanks.

Why switch if you want things the same?

I can answer that in just 2 words & they are (sorry this is going to sound sexist) 'the wife' or 'the girlfriend' - although I suppose technically it should be those that can only do things on a computer because of familiarity ie my wife's click this click that round green icon then were it says firefox - If its not Windows they automatically dont like it (just the same as when I pass her the laptop with ubuntu running or change her windows start menu from classic to the new look - she doesnt like it)

Basicaly this is the reason that I have ubuntu installed with gnome & kde just so I can make my wifes desktop look like windows so its not too big a jump
