I recently updated my driver to a proprietary one called something like :
Nvidia Accelerated Graphics (180)

Now I have lost all of my Compiz effects, so I try to install a new driver i.e. the (173) version, though I don't think this is the one I had before.. and now I log in and gnome is messed up and says something about not being able to load the :0 something or other and reverts to low graphics mode. I can still see the desktop partially and it wraps around to the right.

When I first got Ubuntu I had to shut down the X server and install a driver, which I'm pretty sure was open source, and that worked. Problem is that I cant find that driver and when i go to Nvidia and look at the driver for my card (GeForce 8400m gs) i download it and it doesn't let me install.

Any insight?

P.S. when i went to hardware drivers in the drop down menu it used to say that there are no proprietary drivers running on this machine, so im pretty sure my graphics driver was open source...
