Hey all,

I can't get any media player to play a DVD. I've got Realplayer, Totem, and VLC installed and none work.

I have ubuntu-restricted-xtras installed, as well as libdvdcss2.

Neither of these have corrected the problem.

Any ideas?

Have you tried using VLC media player? It should have the required DVD decryption built into it if Im not mistaken. I know it does with windows. Other than that i dont know where you have gone wrong. Installing the libdvdcss2 should have done it for you. Ive played DVD's under karmic for a while now and never had a problem as long as the required package was installed, regardless of the player.

I followed all of the instructions here:

Installed everything I needed. No dice.
This is the output VLC spews out:

I honestly have no idea. I know DVD playback used to work, many updates ago. I'm willing to bet that a supported update broke this.

you will need libdvdcss2 from the medibuntu repos. first add the repo by copying/pasting the following command into a terminal:

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet updatethat will add the repo and the GPG key, as well as update your repository list. all that should be needed is to upgrade with the following command:

sudo apt-get upgrade

that should show that there is an upgrade available for libdvdcss2...say yes to the upgrade and when it completes...try a dvd.

hope that helps.

After running the previous "wget" command listed, I ran the "apt-get upgrade":

jake@jake-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
jake@jake-laptop:~$

The first thing I tried was making sure libdvdcss2 was installed.

jake@jake-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install libdvdcss
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting libdvdcss2 instead of libdvdcss
libdvdcss2 is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
jake@jake-laptop:~$

Thanks for your help though! :D
Do you have any idea why else it might not be playing?

If you are using Ubuntu 9.04, as your profile suggests, entering these commands should help. If you are using 9.10 then there are some changes to the commands. Just copy and paste into the terminal.

Don't thank me. :D

I just added some info that TrakerJon had in his "Ubuntu Desktop Computing Made Easy (Ubuntu 9.04)" thread to a file I keep for stetting up 9.04. Just Google "Ubuntu Desktop Computing Made Easy (Ubuntu 9.04)" for all the other useful stuff in his tutorial.

He also posted a similar tutorial for 9.10.
