Hello Guys, Im one of the legislator in Cebu City committee chairman for the information and communication technology, I advocate for an open source. Can you help me in doing specification for laptop using ubuntu and open office? That would include basically, drivers for multi-media, wifi, bluetooth, fire wire, dvd, lan, usb, external video connection, webcam, microphone, input.

i have a Neo empriva Laptop: 1.6GHZ intel celeron, 2 Gig DDR2/667 Ram, 160 Gig HDD which runs perfectly under Ubuntu Karmic Koala, everything is supported though this model don't have firewire and bluetooth, been with us for more than three years now and still running with a few hiccups on the ubuntu older versions.

might be easier to query specific hardwares and match it against the Ubuntu Hardware Compatibility List ( http://www.ubuntuhcl.org/ )

or, since this could be mostly a local government project, wouldn't that include vendors where they would participate on a local biding? one might include the requirement to see to it that Ubuntu is fully compatible on its laptop peripherals, be it internal or external?

Although, modern laptop specs these days are mostly compatible with Ubuntu.

You may actually make ANY laptop work with Ubuntu (though some will have issues). But I would rather advise you use either Ubuntu Hardy due to it having Long Term Support with Canonical. Or if you want updated softwares you may use Jaunty or better Karmic. If your plan is to be initiated around April or May, then I suggest you wait for the next Ubuntu version (10.04 Lucid Lynx) since it also have a Long Term Support with Canonical.

For government computers it would quite advisable to use Ubuntu with LTS.

I think the way it probably works,

Is to inquire with local computer stores in Cebu on the ranges of laptops they have, choose a set of Laptop brands/models that fits your budget relative to the number of units you want to purchase.

you then could tell us the brands and models, you could even give us the specs provided by the store, then we can tell you if there are current issues with a certain spec.

affordable linux laptop has flooded stores lately, check if it uses a linux operating system. mostly it is now written in display.

neo is now a ms partner, you can no longer get a no-os neo laptop with them, it will now always have a windows starter. if you will use free ubuntu, do not buy a laptop with pre installed windows that comes with it because it will just add the price tag at P3,000 to P5,000. so if you are going for open source, its like if you buy 6 laptop you get 1 free. and we excluded office, if you are going with openoffice its like 2 free in every purchase of 6.

if you are planning a no-os purchase, better send us its model and specs so we could see if it will run smoothly.

@thread starter: Uy bisaya pud diay ka. PIT SENYOR!!! :D

I'm from Cebu also and I work for UV as a faculty member. I'm a linux advocate too, as for laptop recommendation most laptops / netbooks in Cebu come with WINDOWS OS but some netbooks like HP come with FREEDOS, which is Linux distro like ubuntu

This forum supports ubuntu and I suggest using Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 I would be more than willing to help setup a ubuntu netbook for free, if my work schedule permits me to. I just want to help spread the love for ubuntu.

Sir when you install Ubuntu netbooks generally you don't need drivers as they work out of the box; save siguro if you'd use the new SMART BRO PREPAID dongle as a very minimal tweak is necessary he he he. Try asus eeepc or if price is an issue I think I saw CBX (the one in gen. maxillom) selling RED FOX laptop that has LINPUS OS (a linux distro) built-in. I am not sure though if the unit is still available.

Feel free to PM me if you need more help

^totoo yan sa Cebu at SM Northwing may NEO service centers but the reputation of Neo something that I can not personally attest as many friends of mine dissuade me to get a NEO.

Ang alam ko Neo is made in the Philippines.

Most of my friends are technicians at sabi nila mahirap ayusin ang NEO but then again depende din siguro kung paano dalhin ng user yung netbook / laptop.

am not a NEO endorser nor connected with NEO company.. it's just we have this laptop for more three years now.. been using it to download large files over the internet and most of the times I leave it open/running for more than 24Hours... I have never had any issues with its hardware since the first day we got it! :D other than having issues with ubuntu versions that i installed but on Karmic Koala.. everything works flawless and perfectly!

@script warlock OT: ga sugod ko na buang sa ubuntu last year ra jud. Yup UV has the 'cheapest' ETEAP programs evah.

I was really planning to ask the dean of the CompSci Dept if we can have a ubuntu awareness seminar despite the fact that I fall under the Arts&Sciences Dep't. Luv ra jud nako ang ubuntu, when I installed ubuntu and realized that you can update and the support via the internet was great. GOODBYE, (pirated) Windows XP / 7.

Dapat naa ta CEBUntu group or something.

@bobcab:
Try sending invitations to various computer shops regarding your plan to purchase. I'm sure they would respond ASAP. Try the following shops as they have the cheapest pricing in Cebu:

CBX Cebu (any branch be it North Reclamation/osmena bldv)
PCQuickbuy
ThinkingTools Inc.

I'd go with Loell's suggestion.

1. Get the specs of the available laptops from the retailer(s). They usually give hand-outs (bond paper size) where their products are listed, including the price.

2. Pick the products that fit your budget.

3. Post the specs here so we can get comments from people who've tried to use Linux/OpenOffice in boxes that have similar specs.

You can also check out http://www.buyqube.com/ as they sell preconfigured Linux systems. And their products are affordable, from what I've heard. (Not an endorser, by the way.)

:D
