I am running the latest version of Ubuntu 9.10 and am thinking of buying a web cam can you recommend one that will be easy to install and work? I am asking this after having problems with my printer (now fixed:)) and scanner (not supported :().

webcams and usb sticks use standards so any old one should do, as long as you don't get one with auto tracking or something wierd like that :)

For simple web cam use (Skype, Cheese) I bought the Logitech Quickcam 3000 from Ebuyer at around 10, excellent value and worked first time in 9.04.

Look for one that supports Linux.

Not true about webcams. Some work in Linux; some do not.
