I am new to Ubuntu. I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I have no sound. The sound is not muted and it is turned all the way up. Ubuntu doesn't recognize my soundcard and whenever I try to do anything with alsa through terminal, I am told that no such directory exists.

I have searched the forums and tried many things and none of them have worked. I tried my livecd on a newer computer and the sound worked fine, but on my older computer it refuses to work. Please help I don't know what to do.

I believe pulse is the default sound install in 9.10, not alsa.

You might try the fix for PulseAudio at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578
but, it might not fix your problem.

Another post I stumbled across fixed my Compaq CQ60 Laptop.
If this applies you can try it:

If nothing works, try OSS 4.
