When I do a sudo apt-get update or try to use synaptic I get the following message" E: Type n is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docky-core-ppa-karmic.list"

How do I correct this. I've tried editing /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docky-core-ppa-karmic.list in gedit but cannot save alterations as it is a read-only file.

Please help. This all started when I tried to install Docky.

Open the sources.list with sudo and you'll be able to save.

From terminal type,

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Or post the contents here if you want some help before editing.

You should never use sudo for GUI apps. Use:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
instead.

I don't know but you have karmic and jaunty sources in your sources.list active:

## respective vendors as a service to Ubuntu users.
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu jaunty partner
deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu jaunty partner

## or updates from the Ubuntu security team.
