Lin here:
OK so I was a little snappy.
here is what I've got and what I need.
I've got an older iMac DV SE (G3) running the latest Mac OS (10.3.7),
A 250 GB external firewire drive with three partitions
1. large for music and video files
2. a back up partition (I use "tri-backup")
3. empty 12 GB partition

I want to install ubuntu on this empty 12 GB partition on the external firewire drive.
and be able to boot into either Mac OS or ubuntu.
It dose not matter if I have to clone the Mac OS on to the external drive and run ubuntu from the internal drive on the Mac.

But I need to be able to boot into Mac OS to get my work done! (using Painter IX, Studio Artiest, and Numerology, among other Mac software.... Got to pay the bills)

Later this year I will buy a new G5 Mac. and dedicate this old G3 to ubuntu.

Can I do this?
