Hey guys, I'm kinda a noob to linux and I just installed ubuntu on my system. How is gaming in general on linux once you get everything up and running? Is there any difference in performance when compared to windows or is it just the same old thing? I'm guessing I need to somehow log into root on my comp, install wine, install my video card drivers(this is why I need to log in as root), and put whatever games on there. If you guys could help me at all, that'd be cool. Thanks.

You don't need to login as root, just use "sudo" to run the commands you need to run as root.

For gaming, it all depends. For the native games I run (UT2K4, Doom3, Quake4, Tribes2) they all run perfectly. Basically no difference from Windows as far as I'm concerned. It's when you start running non-native games through wine or Cedega that the differences can become very apparent. I've had Painkiller working kindof alright through Cedega. The fog is screwed up, but otherwise it runs totally smooth. Halflife2 can be tempermental in Cedega for me. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. Guild Wars runs in Cedega, but a little slower than Windows for sure.
