Ubuntu Spotted on Doctor Who Set

By popey (http://popey.com/blog/author/popey/) | Published: January 2, 2010
After watching the two Doctor Who Christmas episodes I thought I’d watch the ‘behind the scenes’ programme ‘Doctor Who Confidential’. During one segment where they discuss the set used in the Christmas episode I spotted a bunch of machines with what look like Ubuntu boot screens on them. If you’re in the UK (or have access to Freesat in Europe) you can see it on BBC HD at 16:55 on 3rd January, or on BBC Three at 04:10 on 5th January. according to the iplayer (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00pk6fg) page. The frame below was grabbed from 38:29 mins in. They look like Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) to me. Probably multiple screens connected to one computer as they are all showing the same thing in the actual episode itself.
A poster there confirmes that it was an old "windows box" running Ubuntu Virtual machines to each of the screens, which run a Flash / VLC front end to play looping videos used in the scene (Same setup is used for Torchwood)

Even though I was never able to get a good enough screen shot to check, I'm pretty sure that the CID computers on The Bill use Xubuntu.

First Google promotes Linux, and now the media. Amazing! Linux is finally reaching the masses!

I havn't watched it for months either. Not since the new "hip and edgy" style came out. Hopefully they'll get rid of it soon and go back to old fashioned thief-taking.

I'm guessing you never got to see the IBM commercials on TV:

I havent really watched it since they changed from the old 'male and female bobby walking away on cobblestones' end credits sequence.

The newer Star Wars films used 3d software in Linux. O_O Surprised it wasn't a huge nerdgasm at the time.

This really isn't all that significant.

Now, I guess you could get excited if they had actually, say, mentioned Ubuntu in the show, but I seriously doubt they would (or would need to, for that matter).

Interesting. Though it might be because of IP reasons, maybe Microsoft would be annoyed if the OS allowed the enslavement of Earth and a million Masters.

A lot of sci-fi shows and movies use linux on the computers shown on the screen. The primary reason is that showing a windows or mac screen would really screw up the idea of being in the future. Also they can use really cheap old hardware and make it look really futuristic and actually do stuff on the screen too, stage magic!!

Linux really is the future. It is in every show set in the future.
