I have a media player with built in wifi and I'm trying to connect it to one of my folders on the desktop. I configured the media player and it recognizes my router plus I created a shared file on the desktop but the media player doesn't recognize it. Should I be configuring something else?

What kind of beast is this media player? One of these external hard drives with built-in controls and TV/hifi outputs?

I presume it has USB. When you plug it into your computer, what is the output of sudo fdisk -l?
