you're not going to find a decent laptop for under $450. just thought I"d mention it.

You might find netbooks though under $300.

an ion netbook would probably be in his/her range.

If you're looking for a specialized Ubuntu laptop (Which I'm pretty sure can run Windows), I'd take a look at System76 machines.

i too would like to know what kind of applications you will be running. if you already have a desktop with a big screen and don't want to do much besides simple tasks like word processing, web browsing, and listening to music then i suggest a netbook. i personally love my new netbook. btw it's a samsung n130 i bought for $280 on sale from best buy.

It's a decent netbook, but the wireless on Samsung's may take a little work under Linux.

The asus netbooks are heralded as some of the best. It'd be tough to go wrong with that one, especially at that price.

You could have ordered this one (http://system76.com/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=92) from System76 and had twice the memory and Ubuntu preinstalled.

I am a system76 supporter and customer. I am also a community supporter.

Personally I don't have time to purchase hardware and then install an OS and then try and diagnose all of the issues if the hardware isn't totally supported by the OS.

Better, for me anyway, to purchase known supported hardware with no issues. When updating, I just put the CD in and do a clean install, and I know there will be no issues.

Trust me when I say that known supported hardware, especially with the OS you prefer already installed, is worth every penny in time that is not wasted.

I am interested in your experience with that new netbook. Post back here with pics and your first review.

I am also interested in a new little netbook, or maybe the new Apple iSlate or iTablet, and am interested in your experience with the small form factor and how it relates to actual usage, good or bad.

Santa brought our oldest 2 girls the MSI Wind u100`s for Xmas and they love the little things....well, mostly.
These models came with Windows and although we did consider chasing down Ubuntu/Linux based machines for them it was just easier to do things the way we did, for a number of reasons.
They`ve actually been using Windows on them since Xmas though and it`s only now i`m finding time to fix that issue, or should i say it`s finally now i`m being made to fix that issue.

That's $70 more, so the extra memory is negligible since you can get another 1GB for less than $70.

Also the system 76 doesn't support wireless N. He also wanted to use both Windows and Ubuntu, so the pre-install of Ubuntu is also negligible.

The OP made a great choice.

Can't go wrong with Asus. I love my oldish 900a eeepc. MSI and Samsung offer really nice options too.
