OK I have finally become a linux convert!

For the past 12 years, every year or two I would take and old PC and try to load whatever was the "linux of the day" on it. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, but it never was enough to take me away from the familiar.

Well, this year, with Ubuntu 9.04 I have finally done it. It took a bit of wrangling, but email is setup, backups are working, I can play music, browse the web, play videos, play games, and enjoy some of my hobby software. Man, I'm even printing to a networked HP OfficeJet!

Great job everyone who worked on Ubuntu! You have made an OS that truly is an alternative. Oh, yeah, and it boots in, like 20 seconds! Whee:D!

Nice Job!

Is this like a "Come to the dark side, Luke" thing?

Just kidding, welcome to the world.

I felt that way after Feisty Fawn, (7.10) and went nuts. (I did use 4.10 and dual booted, but windows still ruled)

Just remember to have a little bit of patience, and linux will pay you back many times over. Nice story.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it, it's a great feeling when everything works for the first time. ;)

With every new release, I get the feeling that it's becoming more and more polished. With Karmic, all my hardware - except my RAID card - is working out of the box.

Where are the days I had to use another computer to download network card drivers, after noticing that Windows couldn't use a generic network card driver (and chipset, audio, ...) during the OS install.

I must say that this has also improved with Windows 7, though. A little competition can't hurt :)

It's true- Linux isn't only an alternative, it has so much you can't have anywhere else. :3 I'm highly satisfied with it, glad to see it's improving your computing experience as well.

I tinkered with Edgy Eft, Feisy Fawn and Gutsy Gibbon but Hardy Heron (8.04) was the threshold for me.
Everyone will have their point at which linux becomes just right for what you need.
