I here all the time from Gnome fan's that they don't like KDE cause it's too "windows like", and it gets on my nerves a bit.
KDE and Kubuntu is built on QT4 which is GPL and is mono.net free. but look where GNome is headed and you tell me which is more windows like.
Interview How much do you love Microsoft's .NET? Enough to trust your Gnome applications to its APIs in the future?
That's what Gnome leader Miguel de Icaza, believes should happen. Miguel calls .NET the "natural upgrade" for the Gnome platform, and enthused about the technology in an interview with us at LinuxWorld this week. Basing Gnome on the .NET APIs will cut development time significantly,
He also had praise for the new Microsoft security model, dismissed the notion that Redmond was employing embrace and extend to its web services protocols, and put the message that the community should get over its beef with The Beast.

I don't care if you like GNOME more but don't give me this KDE is more "windows like" crap.

None. Why compare it to Windows?

I agree that KDE does not get the respect it deserves here, but then most people (including many staff) will give an infraction if you dare suggest ubuntu is not perfect (I got one for saying ubuntu was out of date)
the moral of the story? lie :)

KDE is cloest, default setup wise anyway. Both can be tweaked to resemble the windows desktop though. Gnome could probably do a better job at resembling winxp though. But thats my opinion.

Didn't know that. I will try and be a little more careful, but one good thing for the Ubuntu folks is that when Microsoft starts requiring a royalty after .net has become necessity for their DE to operate. They will always have a foss DE to fall back on in KDE. lol

More for using the word retarded in it's true form of the word describing it being slow regarding the ubuntu package
Re: why repos only digikam 0.10 when site had 1.0 (beta 4)? > "Retard" comment
Something to do with the backward updating system in ubuntu which means only bugfixes are ported

I was always under the impression that the comparison between KDE and Windows was based more on looks than on technical details.

BigCityCat, when people say KDE is more like Windows than Gnome, they refer to the usability, design and interface. (I don't agree, by the way)
You are talking about licenses and underlying technologies.
One thing has nothing to do with the other.

KDE's default setup looks a lot more like how windows is set up. A tasbark on the bottom with shortcuts next to the consolidated menu, which includes the shut down option, and monitoring/taskbar minimizations to the very right.
That's where the similarities end, really, but it's totally different from Gnome. I do acknowledge that older versions of Gnome looked a heck of a lot more like KDE, though. It's a good thing it's changed for the better.
So, while it's nothing like Windows, KDE looks more like its interface than anything else in their current incarnations. It's obvious.
Now, if this is due to KDE taking lessons from Microsoft's UI or the other way around is the real question, and a question for another thread.

IMHO LXDE is super windows like, not that that's a bad thing.

Ugh, I hate when people say that a DE is too "windows like" if it has only one panel on the bottom, with a menu on the left and notifications/clock on the right.
I prefer this layout, it's most comfortable for me. Same with close/restore/minimize on the left side of a window decoration (which reminds me to set that up in KDE).

Truth is you can arrange gnome or KDE to look and feel like MSWindow or MAC if that is your desire. It just takes downloading certain themes and tweaking your settings etc...
You can set up your OS to use different window managers and enjoy packages available to all of them.
The question of which DE is more Windows like does not really apply unless one is talking right out of the box only. Within a half hour's time one can make Ubuntu look and feel like any other OS to the casual user.

One thing is for sure, Bespin and Snow Leopard are very similar.

Depends on how you theme them out.
Neither looks or feels like windows stock, but with theming, they can both be pretty convincing...
Use what you like, like what you use.

Perhaps at first glance, but it is also lightweight and very flexible - not like Windows at all. :)
