Hi everybody,
I recently bought a used Intel Xeon 3.04 Processor server (good bargain from an auction). I've actually installed the Desktop version of Ubuntu 9.1 on that. For the moment its working perfectly well. Is there really a difference in Ubuntu server in terms of hardware performance for general purposes? I don't really need any server functions from that machine.

The problem is usually the other way round; a machine manufactured as a server with server hardware may not have the graphics cards etc etc that are best for a standard desktop sertup.
If it works, then great! Over time you may decide that a few internal added peripherals, eg graphics card, sound card, etc, are worth getting, but if it works for you, go with it.

I have had desktop installed on my server for a few years now, and it functions great. Really, server is a stripped down version of desktop with basic server packages preinstalled. If you're planning on using the server for massive things, you might wanna go with server so you arent wasting resources; but for a small scale gig - its kinda nice falling back on the GUI sometimes
