I have a rig I slapped together a few years ago with a core 2 duo e6600 at 2.4 ghz, 4 Gigs RAM, Nvidia 7900GS. It is choking on the High Definition H.264 video from my new Sanyo camcorder.

I am contemplating upgrading my computer, but I am weary of the cost. From your guys' (and gals') experience, what should I be looking at as a minimum upgrade? Are there any cards to offload the decoding/encoding from the processor that will work well with ubuntu?

Thanks

Have you considered using winff (graphical front-end for ffmpeg) to convert the video into another format? What video editor are you using?

My computer specs are fairly similar to yours, and Cinelerra works OK. When it is creating the final output it's a little slow, but that is to be expected. I've edited an HD video that was 15 minutes long.

Depending on whether your video editor supports it, a faster quad-core CPU might make a difference.
