I've always wondered how difficult it would be to handle a database of 1 billion topics.

That site is horrible outdated, it says we have around 250.000 members.
Right now, we have almost a million members :D

imageboards are usually anonymous, they don't count. You can't register on them anyway (usually. IE: 4chan)

Newgrounds has more users than ubuntuforums, but we're getting closer everyday (Newgrounds has 1,985,752 Users.) Though Newgrounds does get more users every day, yes, newgrounds does count, as they have a forum that counts all portal members.

Actually ubuntuforums.org ranks at #184 if you go by post count

it would be in the top 100 but a lot of legacy posts have been deleted to keep the size down :)

EDIT: judging by the speed the forum has been growing and the quantity of posts every day vs the age of the forum I would estimate it to be in the top 20 English speaking forums

Currently according to alexa.com ubuntuforums.org recieves 0.1% of all internet traffic.

This is huge considering sites like pistonheads.com (another huge and very popular message board) only manages 0.02% of internet traffic

Okay, fair enough.

Last time I checked, gaiaonline had the largest forum. Currently:

Gaia has 1,701,125,048 articles posted with 20,477,001 registered users.
Most users ever online was 123,381 on Wed Apr 02, 2008 1:44 am

We should be close to the top as far as Linux forums go (if not at the top).

My guess is that the only real competition with this forum, out of all the Linux forums, would probably be Linuxquestions.org

i'm not sure that having a very active support forum reflects well on the product. some might wonder how bad it is if there are that many people who need help.

:lolflag: That is one way to look at it. But another way to look at it would be that the people that use, for example Ubuntu, are so grateful that they want to reach out and help any way the can. They might also just want to be part of the community as well.

Possibly, but it also may be the reverse. After all, #3 reason I chose ubuntu over fedora (when I was first getting into linux, and didn't realize I could jump distros more easily than I go to school every day), was because of the large community ubuntu had.

(#1 being the lack of enterprise version, go figure, it made me feel better for some reason. #2 being the nice orange theme, again, go figure, I like it).

A couple of years ago the Gentoo Forums were one of the biggest forums around and most certainly the biggest dedicated Linux forum. I wouldn't at all be surprised if Ubuntu Forums was the biggest in that category now.

The popularity of Ubuntu is a great reason to choose Ubuntu: if you run in to a problem, quite often someone else has run in to the problem before and has posted a fix for the problem on the internet.

You won't get an operating system that never has problems.

There are Japanese and Indian forums that blow UF out of the water.

Some comments:

Quentin and the BB staff in general fell off the face of the earth- as a result, BB doesn't get updated anymore really.

As stated, Gaia Online is the biggest forums out there.

Alexa isn't very accurate, as it relies on people using their toolbar. Also, I believe .1% refers to people visiting the site.

There's one that works with FF, not sure if it plays nice on Linux (although I'd assume it does).

I don't Diablo and Diablo II are historically awesome games!

Maybe. But they're so old that they are "historical". So why are they what the most people want to talk about? ;)

At one time linuxquestions.org use to be huge but rise & rise of Ubuntu and Google search results probably catapulted this forum into a different league.

So as on today linuxquestions.org stands at:
Threads: 770,734, Posts: 3,798,863, Members: 424,593

vs.

Ubuntuforums.org
Threads: 1,249,579, Beans: 8,009,490, Members: 985,519, Active Members: 65,676 :).

is http://www.topix.com/forum/recent big?
after a minute : now i have seen stats: Comments made yesterday: 118,350 • Total comments across all topics: 101,262,782 .

12:08 utc+3 :
while in http://stats.2ch.net/suzume.cgi?yes it is written:

本日の発言数 2,175,419 (2010/03/17 17:50:12 現在) 推移グラフ
translated:
Said today the number 2,175,419 (2010/03/17 18:7:13 current) trends graph

so posts per day of topix.com is little.

2010-03-21 8:02 utc+3 : warning, "topix com" is premoderated when posting unregistered, though no warning or notice about that is given to poster. i do not know whether it is premoderated when posting registered.

id usually agree but with a forum of this size, if there werent more specialised categories then someone asking a question about deb packaging for instance would have their topic send to page 5 before anyone who knows about packaging debs would even see it
