Does it cost $5/month just to receive regular updates/etc, or do you have to pay this just to use the program?

You have to pay to use the program, there is a trial in the cedega page but no free (legal) complete program.
You can try the cvs.

Thats the monthly service charge to recieve updates.
I feel its nominally worth it , specially to help the gaming community on the linux side, so I easily pay out the 5 bucks a month without problem.

The CVScedega is not the same software as the commercial version.
I spent a lot of time trying to get Guild Wars to run, & almost getting there.
Commercial Cedega ran it straight away!
Commercial Cedega gives you tech' support & updates while ever your subscription is current.
You can also, & I strongly suggest that you do, download & install (all easily, through the Point2Play GUI front end) all the previous versions of Cedega, as some games require older versions to run, or atleast to run at their best.
It is my understanding that if you find the $5- US / month a bit rich, you can cancel your subscription after 3 months.
