Hello, as a migrating Windows XP user, I'm liking most things about Ubuntu except how slowly games run under wine. Games that would easily run under Windows XP in normal circumstances lag in even the most minimal situations. My computer is very slow, however, at 800mhz and 128mb ram. Are there any weaks/optimizations I can do via wine or Ubuntu to make them run faster or should I just make a windows partition used specifically for gaming?

Your best bet for running games properly would be cedega(transgaming.com) Costs 5 bucks a month or something, but it can run lots of recent games(HL2, Civ4, Warcraft 3)

its $5 a month to run the thing. you have to log on every time you play. i think the cvs is the full thing tho it might be buggy look into using the cvs.

My understanding is that you can cancel your subscription to Cedega after a minimum of 3 months = $15- US.
I started my sub' only a month ago on that understanding, so I will cancel @ 3 months.
The sub' entitles you do updates & tech support. All versions of Cedega, upto the time you terminate your sub' are available to you. These are easy to install & call from the GUI front end of the commercial cedega.
It is good to get all the previous versions, because some games run better on older versions, or don't run on the newer one(s) at all!
Regarding the free CVScedega, it is not the same as the commercial cedega, & you could spend a lot of time trying to get a game to work & probably failing, when it will work straight away on the commercial version.
Also, the commercial version installs very easily, especially in comparison to compiling the CVS version, when you are fresh from xp. :-)
That has been my experience.
You can download the Cedega_timeDemo which installed very easily for me (I am a noob too!) & allows you to test it for approx' 2 weeks, maybe longer, I forget.
Download link is on the bottom of this interesting page:

All the best!:KS
P.S. You may be interested in my experiences (as a noob), getting Guild Wars to run as fast as possible on Cedega:
