Internet speed very slow

Why sometimes I find the internet speed is almost dead?
Is there a program to fix this or It Is a version problem?

Where are you noticing the slowdowns, what are you doing at the time? Have you updated lately? What about the specs for your box, how much RAM are you pushing? What is your connection to the net?

My speed has been consistent, but I know that Google Chrome is faster then Firefox. I also know that If I'm running a PokerStars game through Wine I get slower responses and if I've got a torrent running I will notice slower speeds in my browser. At rare times, I will notice delays or no connection during inclement weather, but that is part of being on a satellite connection.
