no network connection after karmic install

I've done a fresh install of karmic and now cannot connect my laptop to my network with either wired or wireless connection. Worked perfectly with jaunty and I've made sure all the settings are the same.
I've seen elsewhere that an update can fix the problem. How do I update a system without an internet connection?

I eventually got my wired connection working and was then able to update the system. The new updates fixed the wireless connection which now works perfectly.
