Why do you think your os is better? I'm conducting a poll on this question, email your response at whyisyourosbetter@gmail.com. Respond with any operating system that you think is the best that you use. You can also respond on this thread.

No OS is "better".

Just different ones work for different people. I like and use windows, but that doesent mean I consider it to be better then any other OS.

Why is the type of CPU you use better?
Why is the brand of car you drive better?
Why is the political party/philosophy you endorse better?
Why is your religion better?

These type of questions are always subjective and lead to nothing constructive. Honestly people should just use what they like and what meets their needs/wants. Obviously I would be inclined to say Ubuntu is better but that is just for me. All this type of questioning leads to is trolling and flame wars.

i think he was just asking about opinion, along with resoning behind it...
for example:
I think ubuntu is the Best OS because its clean, and easy to use. the user community is very friendly and helpful (via the messageboard, irc, etc...) there has yet to be a problem i cant fix. while its based on many other programs/code, and ideas, the way it has come together is very refreshing and easy to use. i have yet to find something i dislike about it, the software thats avadible more than suits my needs, its updated often, and with programs such as AutoMatix, its easy to install/configure... the only complaint i have, is games, which is a big thing with linux, but this is NOT linux's fault, its the game producers, who ONLY write for windows... and with things like Wine/Cedega, that can be fixed to a point, and continues to get better.

Ha!

Likewise, but I have to admit that after doing a major updating of XP Pro SP2 yesterday, all...yes, absolutely 100%...of my computer problems went away. Freaking astonishing. All the nVidia crashes, everything, all the mysterious wierdnesses...GONE. Runs perfectly.

You can say this or that about any OS, but actually having everything work as it's supposed to is awfully persuasive!

I don't consider any single operating system to be better than any other operating system. But I'll say my favorite OS, and why I prefer it:

Ubuntu. Why? Because it's free, it has some really awesome software available for it (Compiz, anyone?), it uses a packaging system that works well for me, and it has a really great community.

Hmm... How are the users who use multiple operating systems supposed to answer this one? ... by answering with the OS you think is better?

It's not better.

Ubuntu, honestly, is not that great an OS.
The support on these forums is excellent, though, which is the main reason I use Ubuntu.

I think, GNU/Linux is the best OS for me, because I like control, reasonable security, using terminal for automating different tasks and like the whole open-source idea. Besides, I like debian-like packaging system and there's a great deal of good documentation to almost everything. Last but not least, programming is made easy.

I totally agree with this. Ubuntu is only as good as its community. So far so good. These forums are the best around.

Most of the "difficulty" with Ubuntu is installing it and configuring it.

Ubuntu is not better than Windows, it's different.

Windows XP is better than Windows ME.

Mac OS X is different from ubuntu.

When they go buy a unsupported webcam from best buy, is linux still easy to use?

When they go buy a unsupported webcam from best buy, is linux still easy to use? My wife had this same problem buying a printer for her Mac Powerbook... or trying to find a Mac-compatible non-iPod MP3 player. You do research if you're not using Windows. That's what happens when you have a small marketshare, no matter how "easy" your OS is to use.

That's what makes windows better to the average user.

My os is "better" for me because I feel more happiness with it. And some say happiness leads to productivity... ;-)

Because:

First it was grumpy, which was good.
Then it was hoary, which was better.
Then it was breezy, better still.
Soon it will be dapper, better than better!

Ubuntu Linux, and frankly any Linux based OS is better IMHO than all the "others". The core of it being GPL'd, This protects the software making sure it's free as in speech, and since free copying is allowed, free as in beer as well. One company can not just take it, build on it, and not share the code (as is being done with BSD code).

In terms of performance, I have a 64-bit and 32-bit Ubuntu Dapper running. I can take the source for one app, and have it compile natively on both versions (ok not everytime, but so far 9/10 times =) ). There is no lack of 64-bit apps, it lets me get the best out of my hardware. This could be done on other OS's of course, but with the GNU tools and dapper packages, it's trivial to setup a compile environment that doesn't send me to the poor house.

It's also nice to have an OS that I can potentially sell. Windows license AFAIK are not transferable. If you can't sell it, you don't own it in my book.

Ok yes, this was horribly biased. You asked for opinions, I delivered just that. :)

The phrase caveat emptor comes to mind. If you can't take a few minutes to research before you buy, then don't expect sympathy when you end up with gear that doesn't work with your existing setup.

That's what makes windows better to the average user. I'm not disputing that at all. In fact, that's the main reason I think most people I know should use Windows--they're too lazy to do research needed for Mac or Linux.

That doesn't make Ubuntu difficult to use.

Come on...Windows NT isn't so bad. Win2000 is still a very stable product.
IMO, Windows ME is quite ***

Because it's faster, looks nicer, is compatible with pretty much everything and has a unified install format. Yeah, I'm talking about XP.

I'm just tired. Tired of fighting for embedded video, looking for decent fonts on both a large and small LCDs, wrangling endlessly with Java, drivers that try to do everything and do nothing very well, tired of almost-nonexistant support and nearly-impossible configuration of ATi drivers, tired of a mouse that never moves the way I want it to, tired of config files, tired of command-line, tired of searching for advice and getting fifty different opinions from everyone and their dog from the horribly overcomplicated to the simply non-working.

Ideology is a poor factor to include when considering the software you need to use every day.

Ubuntu is also pretty and easy to use and if it is not as polished as mac os ten, it is undenialby superior for the fact that it doesn't think of you as the enemy.

Ubuntu doesn't try to silently disable user extensions for itunes, doen't lock you out of your music, doesn't dictate how many people can listen to the songs you bought, doesn't use closed, propietary formats and DRM.

Ubuntu is about easy of use too, but its mainly about freedom.

Please mac heads...just get it already...

That is iTunes, not Mac OS. If iTunes was available for Linux, it would do the same thing.

...or to afraid to try something different. I know windows users who feel like the computer is a magical blackbox. The idea of researching and installing a new OS is scary, the terminal is scary, Windows is safe.

My Ubuntu/Xubuntu crossover. Because it has a cool window manager theme, uses very little memory, has a cool icon theme, has fully anti-aliased text, has a cool desktop background, and as an added bonus it looks good :-P
