this is not a thread about halflife 2 problems(i.e. it doesn't work or whatever), so please, don't post those here.
anyways, my wifes brother tossed me a copy of halflife 2 for christmas. i finally got around to installing it on my new ubuntu machine using cedega. it works like a charm and the graphics are pretty good. they are turned up as high as i really care about and sofar they seem kinda similar to the first game, cept brighter and more detailed. i was pretty impressed by the faces though, some of them look pretty real. i was also impressed with the story, much more has been put into making the story more compelling than the first game. if the story didn't grab me right away i would have stopped playing in the first few minutes.
anyways, one gripe about the game is the "jump here, push crate X, pull lever Y, jump to this area, pull this lever....." in the end i stopped playing the original halflife cause i got bored. anyways, it seems i am back to "jump here, push crate X, pull lever Y, jump to this area, pull this lever....." except interjected is more story and some good graphics. in the end i am not sure what to make of the game, i guess i would give it a pretty good review. good graphics and sweet guns don't really make the game for me, its gotta have more compelling elements, like a good story line.
what are your thoughts on halflife2?

Halflife2 is a great game IMHO. But then again I beat the original about every possible way I could think of and then beat all the mods I could find and was basically totally obsessed with it. I have not got to try it on Linux yet, but on my XP box I had a great time with HL2 for a few days and then boom I beat it and thought WTF??? So my official stand is, it is a great game that is a real improvement on the original, but it is far too short. Due to being hindered by dial-up, I haven't got to play any online stuff. I am getting DSL in June though. Is TFC going to be an available mod?

i dont know. i have the platinum, it comes with the original halflife source, counterstrike source, halflife 2, and i can download a bunch of other games too, TFC might be an option.
thanks for your input, it wasnt too hard getting it working in gnu/linux, the biggest pain in the *** was the install and that wasnt gnu/linux fault, it was valves. the install process should be illegal, install game, get steam, setup account, decrypt game, manditory update, wait a million years....... good thing i didnt buy this game, now game ownership truly is a fantasy.

Yea, on my XP box I can't even play without being connected to the internet. I used to be able to tell Steam to "Start in Offline Mode" and I could play. But after it 'Insisted' on it's last update, you can not play in offline mode at all and on my dial-up account it takes me ages to let the thing check for updates and authenticate. I have been playing DOOM III on my Ubuntu box for a good while now and had forgotten about how truly aggravating all of the Steam stuff is. I formally retract my above critique and replace it with, "It would have been a great game if they hadn't crippled it with Steam"

I didn't even attempt this one under linux (though that was mainly to limit how much I could play - I feel dirty booting into windows more than once per day) but I will agree that the game was excellent. The only FPS games I feel comfortable comparing this to are Deus Ex and Savage.

I thought the game blew. I didn't enjoy the story, and yes I found it repeative like every other first person shooter.
Steam pisses me off because of my dialup issue. Personally, I think the AI blew, there wasn't much difference in monsters to fight. There was so many times i got stuck because the AI couldn't move(Barry, or whatever, saying COME ON GORDAN LETS GO, but of course he couldn't move at all.). All I can say to Valve is you made the physics and people in the game look great. That's it. I really don't see what other people think about this game. When I look in PC Gamer all the letters are like HALF LIFE 2 IS SOO UBER COOL, and I think to myself, no it isn't, all I ever see people say is the physics rock, or the graphics are good. Nothing on gameplay.
I played, I beat, I'll never touch again. Getting that game to install on a windows machine was hard enough in the first place. I can't imagine on a linux one.

i just passed the part where you have to use the hoverboat or whatever. anyways, it was a bit weird to get used to, but i passed the whole part easily enough. it seems odd that they made a part so boring in halflife2.... i mean it just KEEP GOING! wow, i kept asking myself when it would end. then i got the gun attached to the boat and wasted the chopper and somehow felt a bit better.
