View Full Version : I give up on 9.10

If I had any idea that so much in 9.10 wasn't going to work, I would have never made an attempt to upgrade. Being that the upgrade totally wiped out 2 of my systems because of the "raid effect". I like an idiot tried new installs. I got it installed, but now I have so much of my hardware that is not working, I give up.

I'm going back to 9.04 because at the present time, it is the most user friendly and stable Linux I know. I've been using linux off an on since 1995 so I am not speculating.

If all you new Linux "wanna bee's" want to try a great Linux operating system. Install 9.04

I sure the heck hope 10.04 is as good.

The list of things that need tweaked in 9.10 is way too long for me to even go into them. I was almost tempted to go back to a package like slackware. At least you expect to tweak everything to get things working in that distro.

Major thumbs down for 9.10. Probably one of the worst linux distributions I have ever come across.

Just a rant.. And my apologies to those that are programmers, because that profession is needed to get 9.10 to work.

I will continue to use 9.04, and still believe it is the best Linux OS out there. But I do recommend to any new comers, Avoid 9.10 like the plague.

I have to say this may be what you have see with 9.10, but in no way is this what I have seen. I am still using the beta install of 9.10, with the upgrades. I was going to do a full install after the release, but found no need to. The only issue I have found is FireFox is a bit slower than before. The rest of my system is running great, and I for one love it.

Now I did not have any real issues with 9.04, and yest it is a great release. The only issue is you have to hunt it down now. It is not on of the DL options on the Ubuntu page. This is not a good thing, it should be there as an option.

I think I'll try 9.04 because 9.10 simply won't install on my (newly built) machine. It gets to the GRUB install and can't install it. Yet, when I go into the Install CD on my W2K3 machine I can see the GRUB and GRUB 2 packages sitting there.

This has been the most frustrating thing I've ever tried to install. While I'm whining, (ha!) would you know of any ubuntu forums where people are actually helpful? Asking questions here is kind of like talking to a wall and expecting it to answer!

Sorry 'bout hearing that you lost your old systems. I know the feeling only too well. I just lost seven years worth of work when my XP Pro system died. Still crying in my milk over that one...

Good luck to you.

Regards.
Paul

You can find Ubuntu 9.04 here: http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/ubuntu-releases/jaunty/ They have a pretty good archive.

I agree about the getting questions answered part. I have been trying for days to get someone to help me with a dual boot Opensolaris 2009.06---Ubuntu 9.10 question on modifying grub2 to work without a single response.:(

I feel your pain, but here is the one word of advice that worked for me and I have been happy every since. Don't give it with out one last grand fight for your OS and see what it can really do with just a little extra help from it's beloved community.

Go onto the DistroWatch website and download a copy of Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.5, which is just a beefed up version of Ubuntu 9.10 that works right out of the box.

I myself wanted to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my multi monitor desktop and it was a nightmare because nothing work, no sound, black screen, and no Compiz ( which is not that important, but looks amazing on a dual monitor system. I was about to give up, hell I did give up on my main system and just installed 9.04 instead which worked fine, with out Compiz.

I downloaded UE, installed it and now everything is coming up roses and working wonderful, full surround sound, Compiz spinning on my desktop and the world is a better place.

What I have discovered after using Ubuntu, or Linux in general after 2 years, there are going to be some ups and some downs. I have tried out a number of distros just to find the right one for myself as well as my family. At one point I even re-installed Microsoft Vista back on my system, but after a short week, I can truly say I will always be a Linux user, nothing more, nothing less.

Next time you might want to use the General Help section. I think more people look there to answer questions. I usually check between General Help and Absolute Beginners.

Avoid 9.10 like the plague.

Why do people assume it will be like that for everyone? Every release, someone comes into this section and proclaims the latest release "is the worst ever".

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Sad.

I'm seriously thinking about not coming into this section any more. It's seems a lot of people think with their hearts and not their heads. Meanwhile, the linux movement marches forward. Peace.

Maybe you shouldn't, if it affects you personally or even irritates you.

You are such a knowledgeable individual in the Ubuntu user world that you might find it a lot more gratifying in the support sections.

Whatever you decide - Peace for you as well.

Ive got 9.10 installed on 2 different machines at home and no major issues at all.
On my laptop I did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10... not 1 issue at all.

The only issue I had was on my file server where a clean install failed to work because of a bug. I havent had time to submit it yet as I cant remember where exactly I made the change and I think it was related to 1 of my sata raid arrays and the IDE boot drive I chose. But once I made a small change in the installer, everything worked 100%. I installed mdadm and mounted my raid array without any hassles!

You are right. Maybe I should not come here.

But, I will say this: I use a lot of operating systems on a lot of different hardware. I will NEVER say any OS is junk because it does not work on my computer. I'm smart enough to realize that any OS will not work on all computers.

I have my own pc repair business, so maybe I'm just used to it, but I would never call ANY OS junk, just because it does not work for me. I know that 1000's (or millions) of people are using it with no problem. But some people seem to think that their computer world revolves around them.

"If it does not work for me, it must be garbage". That kind of thinking won't get you any where in life.

Thanks people, im seeing that there is really some issues on Karmic, but this wont lead me to Jaunty. I'l just wait for 10.04 next year. I never tried the Jaunty but I have used Breezy. All i can see in Kamic is that its better than Breezy of course and I have no idea how Jaunty looked like. Well, hopefuly the 10.4 release would be good.

Can't say i blame you for wanting to wait for 10.04 (the long term release)...i'm skipping 9.10 myself...

I used 8.10 on a Wubi originally and it was very good, then went to 9.04 with a full install and took out windows and don't miss it a bit...

9.04 though is actually quite excellent in my experience...very nice, and extremely stable and reliable..... :)
