I know there's a million posts about steam and the like and i've been through them.. i've actually installed steam 6 different ways because of the amount of reading i have done.
my problem persists however and i want it resolved before i spend money on games online. when steam is open in the store menu, the page is automatically scrolled to the bottom and it doesn't allow me to scroll up at all.
on top of that, the ads for other games show up but only until i click on them. then it just goes blank.. i really wanna play some left 4 dead with my buddies and this is keeping me from having enough peace of mind to purchase the game online.
any help?

The problem persists in every tab of my steam interface. i can't scroll up.. it just shoots me back down to the bottom. I'm worried left 4 dead will be the same, then it's $30 wasted.
any help is appreciated.

I've never had any problems with steam, but I only used to play CS 1.6 , DoD, HL, opposing force, blue shift... umm... rioched and... that's it.
btw a good tip.
if you are a casual gamer on linux, that doesn't have knowledge on how windows works (very few do), then your best choice is to dual boot.

i'll hopefully be getting a great deal more acquainted with linux in the coming weeks. i have a friend that works with linux on a daily basis that will be showing me the ropes around the new year.

dual boot but only use windows for gaming... so no antivirus or anything that doesnt help you play the game you are playing... like a browser is only good while you get patches and should not be used in anything else.
I will guess it might take you half a year to "get" using linux. and perhaps another half a year really getting the grips with it and be willing to do some crazy cool stuff (which you will by then find cool but not now)

i look forward to getting the hang of this. i'm tired of windows. i've been using it for far too long.
i'm still trying to get the hang of the terminal.. i understand what it is, just not quite grasping the commands.

will the faulty sliders in the steam menus negatively affect the games i want to download?

No they will not. In fact on the "My Games" page in Steam the sliders work 100% - the rest of the pages not working are a known issue that will be resolved at some point I'm sure.
As for using the Steam store - just use your browser of choice instead of going through the Steam UI (I've always done this even back in the day on Windows because its just easier hehehe)

thank you. i ended up messing something up when trying to download free games from another website. i had to input a line or two into terminal and it messed up my ability to download software from the ubuntu hub. so i reinstalled last night and am catching up this evening. i need to find the cleanest way to install steam. i had downloaded wine. 1.0.1, then wine doors, at that point i discovered i couldn't download wine 1.1.34 (i had read that it supposedly cured the scroll bar issues) or anything else for that matter.
i couldn't find a way to troubleshoot it so i reinstalled. should i just stick with wine 1.0.1? or is there something else needed for this funfest?

Not at all - in fact the 1.0.1 while "stable" is very, very, dated at this point in time. If you want to be playing modern games such as L4D updating to the latest Wine packages is a must
EDIT: Just noticed your in Rockford - thats like 30mins from me hehehe.

ah yes. how very small of a world.. it's always strange running into people from the same area on a random forum...
So when i download wine, i should be sure to get the "beta" version from the ubuntu software hub, or should i download it directly from wine's website? (that's the only place i've seen it referred to as 1.1.34...
thanks again for the help

For the latest version I always recommend going right to the source (http://www.winehq.org/download/deb)

i'll be trying this again tonight. thanks for the help. I'm rather excited to get to play a game again.. my laptop has had overheating issues for the last two years that i kept putting off for other things, mostly cars. I'll be learning much more about terminal and how to navigate around in there in the coming weeks, but until then, i just want to shoot some zombies and download some movies.

Always look for PPA.
It is much easier than anything else. You just add the PPA to your source list (system → administration → software sources → third party software → add)
and then add the key which tells you if the package has been changed by third party (if it has been then there might be an attempt to put troyan into the package).
After that you install the program from synaptic and it will automatically update it self each time an update comes to the PPA.

Always look for PPA.
I knows to use the PPA, he was asking which PPA to use for beat Wine if you read his post all the way through ;)
