I'm using fdupes to find duplicate files and I found a bunch of them under directories with names like .fr-xxxxxx. They appear to be duplicates of pictures and other real files in my home directory. Does anyone know what they are and if I can safely delete them? They are taking up a lot of room.

I delete mine. Their just copies of what the file looked like before they was altered in whatever way, shape, or form.

The xxxxxx is usually the date.

Thanks for the info. I was just about ready to delete them but thought I would see if someone knew what they were. Since I have been using linux I have found it is not good to do things rashly. :-)

In case of doubt, my technique is:
Move them, reboot. If everything still works, it should be safe to delete. ;)

(Anything in the home directory can always be deleted safely (with regards to the system stabilty) anyway, exspecially dotfiles (.*). The worst that can happen are lost custom configurations (or saves, virtual hard disks, windows programs!).)
