View Full Version : [all variants] "D'oh!" Moments at the CLI?

I suppose an alternative title to this thread could've been "you know you're a noob when....."

So, I've been trying to get something to work on my headless server. Of course, I was dutifully typing into the CLI the suggestions that I found here at Ubuntu forums. But I kept getting unexpected results and nothing seemed to be working right! For example, several dependencies that were there yesterday were now gone!

Then my Homer Simpson-esque D'oh hit me.

Here's a tip for my fellow noobs: when trying to do something on your headless server, make sure you're actually on your server (i.e., Putty or other SSH client) and not merely in Terminal of your desktop machine! :-?

What's your d'oh moment?

I use Windows (three different incarnations) and Ubuntu at home. One of the more common d'oh moments I have is momentarily forgetting which OS I'm using, doing something relatively minor like interchanging / and \ in path names or putting a drive letter into a fully qualified file name in Ubuntu.

I installed linux swap over windows boot partition.
I thought it was a reserve partition, I swear!
