Hi folks, I wonder if anyone can help. I'm running Karmic 9.10 with an Nvidia GTX 260 graphics card, but I'm seeing a black screen if I try to play a video file, although I can hear audio.

I've downloaded Ubuntu restricted extras, and followed various suggestions, some of which are shown at this link: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/fix-for-vlc-doesnt-play-video-after-ubuntu-9-10-karmic-upgrade.html (although I couldn't make Solution 4 work.

I have the same issue with Movie Player and VLC.

Any suggestions, as ever, greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

- Chris.

What format is the video and what codec is related to it?

I've tried an avi I downloaded from a torrent, and a physical DVD - I'm afraid I'm not sure what codecs are related.

You have tried more than one player and downloaded the proprietary drivers. That is good.

Is it only the avi format that doesn't work? Can you please try other formats? That may help to narrow it down to see if it is a problem specific to avi or broader.

Hi u.b.u.n.t.u,

Many thanks for your help, but I'm happy to report that I've got it fixed, following the instructions in the troubleshooting guide here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683

Probably should have found that first, but there you go.

Downloads and DVDs now both playing using GNOME Mplayer.

Now have sound, video, and the secret nerdy pleasure of Second Life all working. I think (think, mind you) that's everything. Go team!

Cheers,

- Chris.
