I'm trying to get an understanding of networking and thought the best way would be using virtualization (I don't have the space nor the spare cash to buy another PC).
I've got virtualbox 1.5.6_OSE installed with 2 guest machines on a host (all Xubuntu 8.04 desktop). What I plan to do is use one machine as a server and another as a client. The reason for this is I don't want to change any settings on my host in case I brick it or cause some security holes because frankly at the moment I haven't a clue what I'm doing.
To get started, I wonder if somebody could point me in the right direction on how to get the two machine connected?
I've done some research and it seems the easiest way of connecting the host and guest is by port-forwarding. Is this possible by guest to guest? If so, would I need to configure the firewall on both guest to allow a port to be used?
Apologies if I sound stupid but this is the first time I have done any networking apart from a brief theoretical introduction on a computer course I did about a year ago.
