Hello,
I'm thinking of upgrading the machine I have my ubuntu server on (move the hard disks to) and also consider upgrading from 8.10 to 9.10. The only thing I absolutely have to save is the homes directory, in part because I don't know every user's passwords.
How should I proceed? I'm also considering installing 9.10 from scratch to a 15gb hard drive and move the /home partition to the old homes drive, then expand the old /homes drive so it takes all the space that was used by the old 8.10 installation.
All ideas welcome
btw the physical upgrade is leaving a p3-1000 with 512 megs of sdram to a p4-2.6ht with 1gb of ddr ram. I tend to use that machine as a smb/proxy server, and also use it to convert avi videos to dvd so the compiling times should get lower.
