Which version of Ubuntu is currently the most stable for Professional Audio applications? With RT kernel of course.

Right now I have Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, I've heard it is the most stable but I would like a second, third, or sixty-fifth opinion.

Thanks,

Ben

Ubuntu LTS should be stable. The 9.04 RT kernel seems to have issues. 9.10 seems to work ok for many people, but it's pretty new and you can encounter some problems (I had with my maudio and pulseaudio)...

Does that mean that when 10.04 LTS comes out, it will be the most stable, or should I give that one some time as well, to work out the bugs.

Experience tells that you should give that some time as well...

Newer software fixes bugs, but also gets new features which causes bugs... The perfect desktop is far from us ;)

thanks for the reply. Anyone else had a good or bad experience?

For me the benefits of the new stuff available for 9.10 far outweigh the bugs that it brings. There have been improvements in the real time kernel and in the ffado firewire drivers which I use on a regular basis. I will recommend 9.10 without hesitation but your mileage may vary.

I'm using 9.04, but with a 2.6.31-9-rt kernel. And that's pretty stable so I'm using that until 10.04 comes out. Maybe I'll give 9.10 a go, it's sitting on my notebook, but I haven't had the need yet to record and produce stuff with it.

If you are wanting stability and few bugs and 8.04 LTS is currently working to your satisfaction then it would probably be best for you to wait until a few months after the next LTS is released before switching.

There are a lot of changes though so if you have a spare partition or spare machine you could install 9.10 now and play around with it in your spare time to learn the new stuff in a low pressure environment before switching your production environment permanently.

But if you like to live dangerously just upgrade now.
