Hi,

I am interested in creating a networked file server for many users to save there personal files to. Ideally the file server would serve as an equivalent for window's 'My Documents' and needs to be usable by windows, mac and linux. I would like to be able to sync email contacts and the like as well if possible.

I would like the file server to be usable from outside the home network so that various laptops could continue to use files saved on the file server when they are out and about. I figure that this would be relatively simple if the laptops always had internet access but this can't be guaranteed.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to go about such a project? Would it be best to have files save locally and rsync or similar to a remote server or are there others way of doing it? What things would I need to consider to ensure that the home network's security isn't compromised?

thanks
