Hello, im new to Ubuntu and am having some trouble with it. i installed it on an old laptop in an attempt to speed it up (and it has!), but i cannot increase the resolution beyond 800x600. I googled around and searched the forum and i tried everything i found but nothing has helped. i really dont know too much about ubuntu and it would be great if someone could give me a simple answer/suggestion. i understand that this has to do with xorg.conf, but 9.1 lacks this file, and when i created one and copied into it what some of the posts suggest i got a graphics error. help me please =)

thanks

When you go to System/Administration/Hardware Drivers is there anything available or is it just an empty window?

Your monitor isn't being detected correctly (specifically, the virtual resolution and horizsync are being set too low). Manually set the monitor parameters in xorg.conf. The sample below uses 1024x768 as the maximum/default resolution. Tweak the file accordingly.

Since you don't see anything in the Hardware Drivers section, you're not using any propietary graphics drivers. Which means you're either using a generic driver, or an open source driver. Instead of messing around with your xorg.conf file, you could try installing an updated driver for your graphics card.

It appears you're using an intel card, so check out http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx and go through their search function to find the right driver for your card and be sure to choose the Linux driver.

You can use "lspci" in the terminal to help you determine exactly what card you have.

Also, installing grphics drivers from vendor's websites can be a bit tricky on Linux machines, so be sure to read through the instructions or find a good tutuorial on the web to follow. I'm not familiar with intel cards myself, so I won't be much help, but if it were me I'd try "Install Intel Graphics Driver on Ubuntu 9.10" in Google and see what comes up.

i tried creating an xorg.conf file, but i couldn't get past the loggin screen before it glitched out and sent me back to the log in screen. also, as far as drivers go i found out that intel's drivers come pre-installed in ubuntu and that i shouldn't mess with them.

i read about a solution called 855resolution and 915resolution, which is something that changes the bios in intel run devices, but i do not know what to do with it since it uses some repostries and such, and i don't know enough about it to try it. any other suggestions? i greatly appreciate the support and quick replies!

This is my Xorg log (i dont know if its any different, i ran your suggested xorg.conf, but couldn't reach the desktop so i had to delete the xorg.conf through the terminal and reboot which might have changed the Xorg log back to what it was last time)

when i used your xorg.conf the load screen would apear in the correct resolution but it would then be forced back into the old resolution (the ubuntu logo was pushed down and to the right) and then it went back to a correct resolution log in screen, and when i tried to log in it just repeated the process over and over again.

if this is the wrong log file let me know

Yeah, that log file is from a session without the xorg.conf, because it's still guessing at the virtual size. :\

I am having the same problems, in so far as the screen resolution is not being correctly detected in 9.10 (it was no problem in prior versions).

After my initial upgrade, I followed the workaround suggested in the 9.10 release notes:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/910

With older ATI graphics cards with 32MB or less of video RAM some corruption of direct rendered windows, for example OSD notifier windows, might appear. This may be worked around by disabling 'RenderAccel' in the Xorg configuration. (426582)

To do this first exit to the console using the following command:

*

sudo service gdm stop

Then create an Xorg configuration file with the command below:

*

sudo Xorg -configure

Then add the 'RenderAccel' option to /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

*

Section "Device"
...
Driver "radeon"
Option "RenderAccel" "off"
EndSection

And restart X/GDM.

sudo service gdm start

Yesterday I misguidedly upgraded the Kernel to version 2.6.31-16 (type uname -r to see what you have currently installed), and the problem reappeared. This time I am finding it very hard to solve.

Any concrete suggestions and help would be very useful!

any suggestions as to how i can get the Xorg log from a session with the Xorg.conf?
is there a command i can input in the terminal to save the log file when the GUI fails to load so that i can later come back and post it up here?
