I installed Amarok but it does not play CD's from the CD player plus when I play files the sound is ugly. It is actually noise like the noise of a radio station not tuned.

Any advice?

Did you install the Restricted Extras?

The noise might be coming from your microphone; mute it (in Volume Control) while you are listening to music.

What are the restricted extras?

If you run System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager, go to Settings/Repositories, and make sure the "multiverse" is enabled.

Then search for "restricted" and select "Ubuntu Restricted Extras," it will install codecs you need for most music playback, and also for playing DVDs.

I checked and they are installed.

Do you know how to play a CD in Amarok. If I insert a CD in the CD player I can't find it in Amarok. I see all directories bar CD player.

I don't think that, since Amarok 2.xx has been released, the CD support is included

You might try Rythmbox.

Amarok 1.4, the older version, is far superior to the new.
