is there program that can turn on a webcam and take pictures from the command line?

something like:

$ foo --snap
$ ls
image-1.png

Cheese can't do it.
any suggestions would be appreciated (no problem coding if required).

Thanks

found the 'streamer' tool, which is supposed to be able to do what i want. but it keeps spitting out this error:

files / video: JPEG (JFIF) / audio: none
no way to get: 320x240 JPEG (JFIF)
movie writer initialisation failed

when i try anything else, the error changes a bit. but it still ends with the infamous "movie writer initialisation failed" line.
this is weird, considering that it works just fine with cheese.. oh well.

any help would be appreciated ;)
