Hello,

I am only basically competent with Linux and have not had a linux machine in fore than 5 years. I have recently had some problems with my old alienware's windows install and rather than format and reinstall I would install Ubuntu as a second operating system.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 with no visible errors using the windows installer (64-bit version I believe). My PC is using a AMD 64X2 processor and a NVidia GeForce 6800 GTO.

After rebooting and launching Ubuntu from the OS selection I get to the login screen. Which is the command line terminal log in. I can successfully log in but can not make the display, X window, or GDM launch successfully.

I see my video card on a lspci command. And xserver-xorg is installed with both ii's. However when I try to reconfigure the xserver-xorg nothing happens.

I get errors telling me that no desktops, or screens or something (using my unstable Windows install to send this so I can't see the exact message right now) are configured or exist.

Any ideas on how I can actually get the GUI to load???

Thanks
