Well, any answer you get will be completely subjective, but I'd say a minimum of 10%. That's roughly what Apple has now, no?

There's no reason to have anything over 50% in the poll.

My subjective guess would be 1/3 or 33%.

I certainly consider Apple to be mainstream...

Although Apple's market share in computers has grown, it remains far behind competitor Microsoft, with only about 8 percent of desktops and laptops in the U.S.

I would say apple is mainstream and they have 6-9% so I would say in that area.

I thought Apple had roughly 5%... but I have no references and I might be referring to something outdated.

I will consider Linux mainstream when:
Its market share is roughly equal to Apples - whatever market share they have, as I consider Apple mainstream too
You can walk into any computer shop and buy a computer with Linux Pre installed
Media coverage in mainsteam media (e.g BBC) is as much as Microsoft and Apple get

I do believe we are well on our way to my third condition! Two out of three!

This guy (http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/hiner/?p=3372) is clearly biased already.Maybe doesn't want to know why our penguin(Tux) is not so popular by the "mainstream" public........M$+friends and "innovations" are something to think about.
