Right, a few people have asked before how the System works, and I have compiled what I think is the system based purely on exploring long threads with loads of posters. The bean count you have is for Tech support areas only, and thus excludes Posts to Community Chat area.

Beans Position
1-2 Ubuntu Green Beans
3-15 First Cup Of Ubuntu
15-99 5 Cups Of Ubuntu
100-249 A Carafe Of Ubuntu
250-400 Way too much Ubuntu
400-550 Quad Shot Of Ubuntu
500-700 Dipped In Ubuntu
700-800 Has an Ubuntu Drip
800-1000 100% Pure Ubuntu
1000-5000 Fresh Brewed Ubuntu
5000+ Ubuntu Mocha Milkshakes (Aysiu & azz appear to be the only holders of this)

Specials
Donators Ubuntu Espresso Roast
Team Members Ubuntu Baristas
Team Leads Ubuntu Apprentice Roasters
Forum Staff Ubuntu Master Roasters
Forum Admins Super Ubuntu Blend

Feel free to correct me of I have any of these wrong, as some of the post counts might not be entirely correct.

Don't forget to mention that "beans" are posts to technical-support areas of the forums. Beans are counted.

Beanies of the Month do not have a post count marker - (Ubuntu Mocha Milkshakes) - they are determined by calculations run at the beginning of every month; post counts may vary wildly.

Shouldn't it be:

800-1000
1000-2500
2500+5000
5000+

Just a thought, I think it's a big step 1000-5000

...just putting that out there. Maybe some would prefer if post counts were less of an issue.

Sometimes I get the impression that more people would add to some threads if someone with a huge post count had not contributed. Perhaps they dissagree with something but are not about to contradict someone with 5000 posts, even though they may be right.

If you stopped counting after a lower, but arbitrary number (it does not even have to be constant) that would put people on an equal footing.

I used to get told that I am wrong a lot more often when I only had 1000 posts or so.... I am *not* that much smarter today...

Who cares if you have 2000 or 6000?

I used to get told that I am wrong a lot more often when I only had 1000 posts or so.... I am *not* that much smarter today... Likewise. I still consider myself in many ways to be a newbie. I'm certainly not as knowledgeable as the other forum veterans... or even some of the new members...

meh i like to see the post counts, but maybe it should not be displayed in the forums just the user profile.

bonzodog
February 22nd, 2006, 05:21 PM
well, I only provided an initial guide after a new user asked me the question, and I was also curious. So, I opened mousepad and spent some time noting down the 'ranks' and what sort of order they were in. I then attempted to pin bean counts to them, and the list you see above is the results. It's interesting to note the admins reaction to this, and they are now altering the system so it is no longer based on beans.

Well before this gets out of hand and turns into a flame fest let me say this. We are not removing beans, post counts or the title tags.

az
February 22nd, 2006, 06:36 PM
Flame fest?

How could this possibly turn into a flame fest?

bonzodog
February 22nd, 2006, 07:04 PM
Just an idea;
We could have a yearly scheme for the 'ranks', and maybe change the theme a little bit. I think the bean count ought to be hidden from public view, only made available to a user inside their CP area, and then at the end of each year award a special title to the person who posted the most for that calender year. If the bean count is hidden there won't be deliberate spamming in order to bump up a potential count of posts in order to 'best' someone else. The title can then apply to the Overall number of beans since joining or special status on the forums.

first of all, what's up with all the lobsides beans for some people? and oddly assorted cups? (take UbuWu, for example).

i like the new names, but shouldn't 'freshly brewed' be for 'fresh' users? (as in new ones).

Keep up the good work! :)

Hmmm... freshly brewed can also be for that 3am pot of coffee that gets you through the project/course/class/etc. :D And that 'fresh' inspiration you get from that 4th cup of espresso... heh.

I've added some whimsical rank images into the mix, that's all. Just a bit of fun.

Glad you like your Cookie Ubuntu Monster. :D

I was reading a bit this thread ... trying to understand the rules ...

Indeed I can see you are in rank 21 with less than 700 beans only. That's impressive ! How can it actually happen (concerning the calculations)? 10 thread started as I can see ...

Greetings,

Patrick

'rank 21' is simply the name of the image; rank images, number 21 - we do not have 'rank numbers' per se.

What are you talking about? All we did is add more ranks to an already setup system.

right.... they aren't 'ranks based on posts' .... they're semi-randomized images and titles. That's it... that's all...

No turning energy into matter, no conspiracy to overthrow any government, just a few fun images and titles randomly thrown into the forum software.

Aaahhhhh, thank you for the explanation !!

So, the only mainly rule is kind of this only true & mainly one below, and the only one to think about... I always thought it was a mysterious calculation, that even researchers could be working years on it, before being able to understand it ...

Hello !

I believe that the:

1-2 Beans = (should be) "First Ubuntu Flavor" - instead of "Ubuntu Green Beans"

Besides, what the heck does "Ubuntu Green Beans" mean man?...

Also, when somebody reaches these levels:

1000-5000 Fresh Brewed Ubuntu
5000+ Ubuntu Mocha Milkshakes

You should create more categories... man...

It will then make it more interesting...

... and people are going to setup goals...

Also, I agree that people with the MOST beans should get some Prizes!!!

However, that should be calculated on how much they help this Forum:

1. On a Monthly Basis - e.g. Benie of the Month (or whatever you call it)
2. On a 4-month Period - e.g. Benie of the Quarter (or whatever you wish)
3. On an Annual Basis - e.g. Benie of the Year (or whatever you want to call this)

Cases 2 & 3 on the above should get prizes & stuff...

How about (only for case 3) a trip to Jamaica or Hawaii or EVEN to UBUNTU Headquarters?

And then, create a thread inside this Forum where they could tell us how their experience was with the UBUNTU programmer staff... & maybe see some pics...

And since the prizes are going to be calculated on a per-year basis, nobody would really know or sit&calculate his/hers beans...

Besides, even if you would go & calculate YOUR beans, you would not really be able to know or figure out, how are other people's beans doing through the entire year...

What do you think guys?...

Besides, the guy who would have won the "Mr. Bean's" prize, would worth it, since he would have contributed so much in this Forum...

I suggest 2 prizes:

1. For the Absolute BEGINNER of the YEAR - a "Mr. Beannie" title (the Bean-Kid).
2. For the Absolue EXPERT of the YEAR - a "Mr. Bean" title (the Bean-Father... e.g. like the God-father).

What do you think?

There are way more important things in life than beans. You guys take this way too serious.

PS: I never wanted to be a bean. Being a "bean" sounds a bit depressing imho, but... who cares?

It looks like this would cause a lot of extra overhead for the hard-working moderators. We should have to have an IPO and incorporate the "Bean there- Done that" International Contest. There would have to be independent judges for the quality of the posts or maybe the Customer Service Quotient (CSQ). To a complete beginner, a standard answer does not have a high CSQ. Telling somebody to make a shell script to run strace when their nautilus app fails (as it does 35 time a week, for some reason) would have a low CSQ, but the same answer, to a more experienced person would have a high CSQ. I guess the best CSQ would always leave the seeker with the next logical question on the higher plateau. in the preceding illustrative example, the higher plateau question might be a request for samples of the script that do that. A lateral question would be definition-based, like "What is a shell script?" - lol
