hi, the status of the cups bug on lauchpad ( https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gnome-cups-manager/+bug/28812 ) has changed from "needs info" to "unconfirmed". So please add a comment saying that you have the same problem!
Greetings, ~weatherman.

There are multiple bug reports under different headings, CUPS, printing, a specific printer, whatever. Every one of them has been entirely ignored. In Jane Weideman's latest update on the Fridge forum below, "Flight 4 takes off", her report contains a paragraph from Martin Pitt which might be taken to mean that there will be NO local printing in Dapper, ever, Dapper +1 if we're lucky.
I'm going to compile a list of the many bug reports on Malone, and posts on this forum, to add to the Fridge Discussion response to Jane's status update.

Hi, I just posted a comment confirming this bug, changed it's status to confirmed and it's severity to major (maybe i should have set it to critical).
Please community post your bugs in this and other subjects, help Dapper be as close to perfection as possible!

that would be cool, tnx for your work. Maybe nocturn will be able to do something once you've compiled the list.

I've read the report too, but can't quite understand this. Can somebody confirm what is going on? I will, and thousands with me will NOT use Dapper if we can't print locally.

I wish I could, but I'm a moderator, I have no ties to canonical or the devs.

I would add to the report if I could (even install dapper for it), but I don't even own a printer.

I read it to mean that there will be no automatic printer configuration, which is a different thing.

I agree that someone needs to compile all the problems together to emphasise the seriousness of this.

I couldn't tell you if CUPS is/isn't working at the moment as my USB is stuffed.

lol ok I'm an idiot, thought only devs could change that. Oh well, good thing anyway

Agreed that it needs to be fixed. I got it working in KDE by going into System Settings-->Printers-->Print Manager-->Configure Manager-->CUPS Server

From there I changed the host setting to localhost and got it working.

Do you mean that what is not to be added is to actually plug a USB printer and it being automatically added and configured without user interaction? If that is the case then fair enough, if it is something else then please somebody explain.

Edit: Ive also changed the milestone to Dapper, as maybe the bug being reported to Breezy and the devs focusing on Dapper bugs, it is being ignored.

I apologize for being an idiot...I COMPLETLEY spaced the fact that I installed CUPS by hand from cups.org and that's why I have a working file...sorry :-#

I just remembered that in falcon repositories
http://deb.thehunter.ws/dists/breezy/all/

They have a cupsys that I haven't tried, but seems to fix a few problems. Can somebody downgrade its cupsys to this, see what they get?

Do you mean:

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=750255&postcount=29

I don't think anyone is interested since it only affects machines when you try and change the default settings. I wonder is it perhaps not deliberate like the hacked libs to stop you using non GPl libs ??

I have no idea about dev lists and stuff Im just a noobie ... so if this is the same problem or not I don't know but the solution is fairly simple to do.

Great! That worked for me, i wasnt able to use this menu before though, it used to give me some error.

I have also problems with printing. I use a canon ip3000 with the turboprint drivers, and it will start printing well, but then will stop. It sys it is printing, but won't do anything.

Anyway.. how do I change the setting to localhost in gnome? How could I install a working cups??

Thanx!

The last update to cups in dapper was in the middle of january and was labeled ver. 1.1.99. Cups on dapper reports it is ver. 1.2svn which is a beta release. Dapper is way behind on the upstream bug fixes. Like five weekly snapshots behind.
