I believe I have run into faq#13 http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/faq.php#13

I installed it while in Gnome, and it crashed pretty quickly. I then restarted the machine, and it frooze up just as the "Starting Gnome Display Manager" message came up. The suggested work-around is to disable the sound modules while having the modem modules installed.

I guess this makes sense, as these software modems are really a type of sound card, or something similiar, rather then a real hardware modem.

Any recommendations on what to use for a modem? This machine needs dial-up access.

Try here:

http://www.linmodems.org/That leads me to http://www.linuxant.com/ which is where I got the crashing hcfusbmodem module from.

Are there any external usb hardware modems that work?

Or perhaps a usb-serial adaptor for an hardware serial modem? Does that work with PPC?
