OK, have upgraded to xubuntu-desktop 4.3.0, and it rocks. Compositiing is something else. It really is competition for the other desks now. It appears to run xscreensaver in a transparent mode without a black background and the fade in/out effect is brilliant!
I much recommend this to people.

It is lovely, isn't it. I've been playing with it for a while under different distros, and as I become more confident in Linux, I can do without all the handholding of the heavier DEs and appreciate XFCE's simplicity and speed.
But our repos aren't set up for all the goodies. For example, looking for weather-plugin returns this:

xfce4-weather-plugin:
Depends: libxfce4util-1 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libxfcegui4-3 but it is not going to be installed

I installed this the other day and had problems using it with twinview. Apps on the first monitor will jump up to the top of the screen, off of the scree and under the taskbar. On screen 2 all is as it should be.

Some of the plugins haven't been updated yet and won't work in 4.4, there's a new panel plugin architecture and the plugins need to be ported.

Edit...
Found a workaround for the Twinview issue. It seems having a panel at the top and bottom of the screen is messing it up. If I move the bottom panel or make it freely moveable, the problem goes away. This only occurs on the first screen. There was a post to the xfce-dev mailing list today about this issue.

is there a version freeze in xfce4-svn now? I cannot compile xfapplets panel plugin because it requires xfce4-panel r19874, while r19871 is in the repositories...
