Use DVDRip.

sudo apt-get install dvdrip

Or you could use handbrake, or brasero (which is already installed) or k9copy (for kubuntu). There are quite a few options. It kind of depends what format you are looking at.

Handbrake is my recommendation if you are looking a single multimedia file similar to avi. after reading your post again, this seems to be what you are looking for http://handbrake.fr/

k9copy does this as well, and backs up to iso files.

Brasero can do iso files as well.
