Some people say that they like Empathy better than Pidgin but I strongly disagree and I feel the same way you do.
Fortunately, Empathy is easily removable from the Ubuntu Software Center and Pidgin is easily installable from the same spot.

I do not know the reason for the switch but I did like Pidgin a lot better. Empathy is so ugly and does not even work for me half the time.
I agree, just install Pidgin.
It was nice to have it pre-installed but it is not a huge deal.

They say that's 'cause it has better video support, but WTF, I prefer Pidgin also...:-k

I think they did it from same reason they are removing GIMP from Lucid Lynx. Space on CD. I think that Ubuntu realy, realy need to switch to DVD and put some more software inside.

Its not as if GIMP is gone from the repos, its an easy install. And why should an OS get bigger and bigger, it makes little sense to inclue applications on the LiveCD that are not frequently used.
i wish they left it uninstalled and let me choose form the start, and with even more apps. For instance maybe I dont want openoffice on a LiveCD

Actually Empathy has better potential for video support, as of right now both are horrible at this function

Meh. I don't really care, as you can install Pidgin in under a minute. I gave Empathy a fair shake with this release, but so far it's crashed on me whenever certain MSN-contacts start chatting with me - so for now I've switched to Pidgin. I'll give Empathy another go with 10.04.

I thought it had something to do with a security policy that integrated better with gnome.

I still use Pidgin as Empathy feels unfinished to me and Pidgin does the job just fine.
To answer your question though, Empathy is now the client that comes with Gnome, so that change has filtered down to Ubuntu.

sudo apt-get install pidgin
Add: sudo apt-get purge empathy && sudo apt-get autoremove

I like pidgin simply because i can facebook chat and twitter.
I'll try empathy later again when i find these plugins.

Same thing happened in Fedora 12.
So i removed empathy and installed pidgin silently.

I like the direction empathy is headed, but it does not yet have as many options and plugins as pidgin. As empathy matures you may end up preferring it to pidgin.
But, this is why I prefer to do a minimal install + add only those apps I wish to run rather then Ubuntu Desktop.
I think they did it from same reason they are removing GIMP from Lucid Lynx. Space on CD. I think that Ubuntu realy, realy need to switch to DVD and put some more software inside.
You do know there is an Ubuntu DVD don't you ?

I would prefer the opposite, a small net install , but one that allows better selection of which apps you wish to install. Net installs make sense in that you can install ubuntu-desktop if you wish, or lighten up, or add , and all apps will be up to date with minimal bandwidth.
