So here they are,the specs of the 7 different editions of Vista.
Can we add a column with Dapper and tick all the lines and then add cost 0 $ at the bottom ?

What the fu.. er.. heck are Microsoft doing?
Aimed at beginner computer users in emerging markets who can only afford a low cost PC. As with the XP version, Windows Starter 2007 (note that it's not branded as Window Vista) is a subset of Vista Home Basic, and will ship in a 32-bit version only (no 64-bit x64 version). Starter 2007 will allow only three applications (and/or three windows) to run simultaneously,
Are they having a laugh or what? What is the point in an OS that only allows 3 windows open at once???? - especially as this "low cost" PC will need to be something like a 2Ghz system with >256MB ram to be able to use Vista.
Oh dear microsoft.. you've lost it somewhere along the line with that one... :-|

Ah, hell, someone will eventually jack up the Starter 2007 to include everything the Ultimate version has.Or maybe just pirate the Ultimate edition that will probably cost both your kidneys, to start with.

I really could not care less about all the windows versions!!! I use ubuntu because I like the system. Mostly I like:
Ubuntu/GNOME simplicity << interface is the best on the market (imho)
apt-get / fully automated aplication install
NO ADWARE/VIRUS or stuff
secure by design
update system works great
fast development
performance (with dapper drake faster then windows on my pc)
builtin easy customisation << Window managers, icon thems, gdesklets etc etcWindows cannot offer me one of those features. I really don't care that 90% of all the people in the world use windows. Please let them.
I SIMPLY LIKE (UBUNTU) LINUX.
(ps and now with xgl i can have all the eyecandy i can take)

well... i think no self-respecting comp user (who still uses win) will not go under vista ultimate...
i for one would be superfrustrated, when my new comp would come with vista starter/basic/whatever, which i then had to crack to ultimate
fortunately there is an answer -> that is *nix world

ROFL :p
Now that's a good reason for emerging markets not to use hacked versions of windows :P
Stupid.

Excuse me so:
1)Winamp
2)IE 7 (of course!)
3)Outlook (or Windows Mail as they say it will be)
are open.
I try to open notepad to copy-paste some test. What do I get??
"Windows Starter 2007 only allows 3 windows opened at a time to prevent your low-end 2GHz and 256MB RAM PC from slowing down"?
or
"Windows Starter 2007 only allows you to run 3 applications at a time. Click here to buy REAL Windows Vista"
ROFLMAO.
This is just stupid. If I lived in US I'd buy a PC with that, and then sue them for some reason.

lol :) Trust Microsoft every time...
As for a comparison table, do you mean something like the attached? Sorry about the compression... it wouldn't let me ship it otherwise.
Picking up on a point from that: when micrsoft releases 64-bit versions of it's codecs (which it has to do soon, right?) will we be able to use them on 64-bit systems, in a similar way to w32codecs? I can't see any reason why not... but thought I'd better check :)

I'm pretty sure Vista Ultimate (bundled with Office and Photoshop) will go for about $25 abroad. I don't think people abroad will be happy with Vista Starter after trying out XP Professional (the bundled version ;) ).......

the price in estonia for xp pro is about 170 usd ... and i guess vista will only be more expensive... their price-politics suck almost as bad as their product

Hey, let's not complain. Let's urge Microsuck to cripple ALL versions of Winblows, and then we may see a whole flood of new traffic here on the boards.

I have an idea for microsoft:
Make the Starter Edition modular so it only boots up to a table with additional features which can be bought, like this:
Network support: 10$
Ability to have desktop icons: 5$
Start Menu: 7$
Mouse pointer: 5$
Basic tools (notepad, paint, IE etc...) 20$
Registry 25$
and so on...
Of course this must be repeated for each user, and btw, why not take 10$ for every user account created?
Also, why not give the user a 105 characters long activation key for each feature bought, which must be entered at every reboot and for every feature, also it will expire after 15 reboots or 5 reformats whichever happens first.
Ofcourse it will be hard to even buy any feature without mouse pointer and network, but people will adapt :)
I bet you a free download of ubuntu that you will make a lot of cash this way, microsoft. Go for it!

I've used vista, and i'm not impressed. Performance is nowhere near what linux offers, even if optimized for 386. Seriously, here are the specs for my system.
ASUS A7V8X Mobo
VIA KT400A Chipset
AMD AthlonXP 3000+ (Barton Core, 512K Cache, 333FSB, ~2167Mhz)
512MB PC2700 CL3 DDR Memory (unbranded)
Western Digital WD1200JB 7200rpm 8mb buffer Hard Drive (Dapper)
Western Digital WD800JB 7200rpm 8mb buffer Hard drive (Windows)
2xDVD Dual format Double Layer DVD Burners
MSI nvidia GeforceFX5600XT-VTDR128 (128MB DDR VIVO Remote)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ubuntu Warty,Hoary,Breezy,Dapper = incredible speeds, faster by distro:KS
Suse 9-10.1 = Nice speeds, more features by distro
Fedora 1-5 = Nice speeds, more polish per distro
Windows XP = OK performance, defrag 1/day, slows down every update
Windows Vista = Horrible performance, slow boot times, lag to even open a document with notepad. Even with large swap file (1.5GB) have horrible time keeping open for more than 20 mins w/o feeling like getting a walker & a metal alert bracelet for my pc. ](*,)
I think the feature base is ok for vista, but really see it as a marketing gimmick. I like the speed, & reliability of linux, the extra little features are just icing on the cake.

Add 512MB more to make it faster. After having 1GB of RAM, you could install Vista and use with a little more speed, or use Slax to have your RAM as your harddrive............

When will Microsoft realise the Starter Edition is no way going to stop piracy!! People can buy or obtain pirated cds for much less than 25 $. And will they buy a crippled OS just because it is legit? I don't think so...
3 apps at once.. holy ****...
Of course, everyone will get the Ultimate... but the Ultimate costs a bucketload.

Why would most home users want Ultimate? It is just both the business and home versions combined. Vista Home Premium would be a better fit for most home users.

Those who have tested Vista beta and complain about how sluggish it is or how it uses all the memory. Well, it's beta and therefore it's full of debugging code etc. The final version will for sure be faster and more memory friendly.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not windows fan (running Ubuntu on both my machines), but this is just stupid. Vista will be the major relase of the year (or next year) and I'm sure there will be more good than bad compared to XP, which is pretty steady already. They are not stupid at Microsoft. They know exactly what they are doing.
I'm very interested what new Vista will finally provide, but I highly doubt that I would change back to Windows. Ubuntu is just form the other world.

Microsoft doesn not expect anyone to use the Starter Edition. It was introduced to prevent pre-installations of Linux in emerging countried. If you sell the Starter Edition for $5 to OEMs and they can sell a complete computer WITHOUT linux, microsoft wins.
Of course, everyone then replaces the Starter Edition with a pirated Vista, but that is what Microsoft wants.

Wow. I just checked what they'll include in those versions.
These are some of the features missing from Home Basic vs Home Premium:
Aero Glass
Remote Desktop
DVD authoring
Media center
HD publishing
PC-to-PC Sync
Mobility Center(?)
Tablet PC functionality
Auxiliary Display support
I sure hope that Home Basic is not the equivalent of today's XP Home, which is included in many OEM computers.

well, uhm, bc you can, and for cheap too. I remember seeing XP Professional with Office XP bundled for $20 when XP came out.

Well, even if computers in piracy-friendly nations came Linux preinstalled, Vista Ultimate would be among the "maintanance toolkit" CDs of computer technicians. That wouldn't help Linux.
On second thought, yes it would. Sales for Microsoft down => good for Linux and Apple.
Legal Disclaimer: I never used pirated software and do not encourage anyone to do so either. <= Becoming too American by living around here too much.

I think you are talking about apples and oranges. Vista Ultimate Edition will be the most expensive version of Vista. It is a superset of Vista Home Premium and Vista Business. Unless you use your home computer as both a home and work pc, you are paying extra for nothing but useless extra bloat and features. This is not the same thing as having Office XP bundled with windows XP for $20. In fact it will be at least $100 more that Vista Home Premium.
