What model is the wifi in your notebook? I have a Compaq R3240 which uses a Broadcom BCMWL564 wifi chip. I use Ubuntu-64 Breezy and got it working, but it's a bitch if you're new to Linux. After my last bout I wrote the whole process down and posted it on a wiki at:
http://prinsig.se/weekee/index.php/Ndiswrapper64
That is a website devoted to the Compaq R3000 and R4000 series of laptops. Most use the same components, and I'm betting yours has some of the same internal parts as well. There is also a link there to the 64-bit driver that ndiswrapper needs.
