After 5 days of stuffing around with sound on Karmic and now having none I have made an executive decision.
I have two hard disks and will do a fresh reinstall of karmic on one and will install studio on the other with a known stable version ubuntu.
Which version is most capable and hassle free?
I am running an intel dual core cpu at 2.5GHz and onboard HDA sound with 2GB ram.
Thanks from Hakim

Hi Hakim,
I am using Karmic which uses Pulseaudio for sound, but previous versions used ALSA. So if you are having sound issues with Karmic's sound, you might find Jaunty's (ubuntu 9.04) sound to be better. Have you asked any questions about your sound issues here on the forums? I wouldn't be able to help but I'm sure that there are plenty of people here that can.
Good luck,
James.

Thanks James,
Have asked once and got help with a specific issue (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1334820) but have now downloaded jack and Ardour and am having lots of problems hearing sound. Mostly what I have been doing is reading posts on similar issues, of which there are many, and fixes, of which there are a few for individuals but no generic fixes.
What decided it for me was reading a recent post about uninstalling pulseaudio and the discusson that followed. But many other posts had similar messages.
I am also considering checking out debian.
Thanks for your reply.
Hakim
