GIMP will be replaced by F-Spot , which is not really what we called an image manipulation program. not cool!

They're just removing it from the install disk. If it's already on your system it won't be removed by the upgrade. It'll still be available from the repositories and "Software Centre" for anyone who needs it after a fresh install.

Is it really about *replacing* GIMP with F-spot? F-spot has always been in Ubuntu. It's more of like simply removing GIMP

Does F-spot have new editing feautures? hmmm

Yes. It makes sense because GIMP is a full-blow manipulation tool while F-spot is about management and simple editing. Think Picasa, Lightroom and iPhoto.

You can confidently say that 80% of home users have no need of a Photoshop or similar tool but that same percentage require a photo management tool at the very least.

Yes Ubuntu is shaped as a consumer OS (which makes sense as the least common denominator).

yes that was also pointed out in UDS, but since it's the video editor that uses Gstreamer it is more aligned in Gnome compared to others, the developer is also collaborating with Ubuntu, stressing out that by the time Lucid Lynx, it will be usable and solid for very basic video editing.

Is it possible it has something to do with disk space? To remain a 1-CD distro, something has to give sooner or later. The core packages keeps getting bigger and additional must-have packages are inserted with every release.

I don't know if it's with the same reasoning that the Fedora 12 Live CD does not include the OpenOffice suite anymore. Even without OO, the current Fedora CD is already at 650 MB (in contrast, Karmic is close to 700 MB).

Just wondering...

disk space is probably one of the issues, but the decision isn't really based on that.

It is a good decision; your average user doesn't want something so complicated for basic tasks.

Thanks for the link. The arguments cited seems logical.

If I'm Canonical though, I will still include a shadow menu entry of GIMP in the default install, sort of a placeholder. Then, when the user clicks on GIMP, the user will be prompted if s/he would like to download and install the GIMP packages from the Ubuntu repos. It ought to make the transition to a GIMP-less Lucid Lynx smoother for hard-core GIMP users.

kahit maglagay man lang sana sila ng other lighter alternative for simple image editing just as how Windows comes with MS Paint.

Paint is more like image creation (drawing tool) than manipulation (image editing) right (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/mspaint_overview.mspx?mfr=true) ? Something like bitmap drawing is OK I guess but for image editing, F-spot already has some basic functionality.

Latest news/rumor about this eh Paint.Mono (Paint.Net) na daw ipapalit sa GIMP... the news came from boycottnovell.com so i guess its just another mono bashing article... lol

Just to put things in perspective, even the GIMP folks (even Sven) think this is proper.

If the one of the prime movers of GIMP says so, who are we to argue? :)

As long as I can get it from the repos, it's all good. :D

And may natutunan pala ako last week na bago (sa akin)... pwede ka pala mag mass upload to facebook (and other services like picasaweb and flickr) using digikam (kipi-plugins)

Bakit nga kaya hindi na lang Phatch ang ilagay nila? Dami pa man din nagagawa yun. Nga lang kasi, wala yatang previewer kaya baka mahirapan ang mga tao.
