I am another Linux virgin & I am hoping that the good people of the ubuntu community will be gentle with me.
Please can someone tell me if there is a Ubuntu distribution which will run on a desktop PC powered by a AMD Semperon 3000+ ?

Yes. Just download Breezy and install. I use a Sempron 2800+ in a laptop and it's all good.:D

Thanks. I just wasn't sure if the Semperon 3000+ was AMD64 or not

I really like the idea of being a ubuntu Breezy user but am not sure if I have the knowledge necessary

Also worried about the fact that I have an ATI Radion 9250 graphics card, will that be a problem?

That particular Radon should work fine. I think it's old enough that the open-source drivers will support it with 3D acceleration. If not, the binary ATI drivers should.

Asking questions (nicely, and with lots of background info) on these forums will almost always get you an answer :)

It doesn't matter whether the Sempron supports AMD64 or not. AMD64 chips can run 32bit code perfectly well (you can run windows on an Athlon64, for example - you don't need Windows64). I'd recommend getting the i386 version regardless - it's just a little less hassle, and there are more people running it (= more people who can help you).

Many thanks for advice RAOF. I'll try the i386 version & have a good look at those links. Am still a little nervous about the whole thing but I guess as long as I keep Windows & ubuntu seperate there is nothing to lose
